A "spug", as one might easily guess, is a cross between a spider and a bug :-). A college buddy of mine and I coined the term many years ago when considering the classification of a bug-like stuffed critter his sister had created for him.

So many years later, I was trying to think up a unique namespace for all of my code (to distinguish the components from similarly named libraries) and I decided to use the "spug" name. In retrospect, I might have done a search on the name - my code is in no way related to the Seattle Perl Users Group.
